What is a horizontal brace?

A horizontal brace is a rigid tube with a claw hook at each end, fitted level between the tower's frames. Its job is geometric: it holds the frames parallel and the tower square, so the structure behaves as one rigid box rather than two ladders standing near each other.
What it actually does
Frames alone can rack — parallelogram sideways — under load or when the tower is moved. Horizontal braces lock the plan shape, keep platform supports aligned, and in many configurations also serve as the guardrails on working platforms, which is why the manual is fussy about exactly where each one clips.
Identifying them
- Straight tube, claw at each end, the same length as your tower's frame spacing.
- Usually colour-coded by manufacturers to distinguish them from the longer diagonal braces — check your manual for your system's convention.
- The claws snap onto frame rungs and lock with a spring catch; a correctly fitted claw cannot be lifted off without releasing it.
Fitting rules
- Fit every brace the manual's configuration diagram shows — the diagrams are load paths, not suggestions.
- Guardrail positions are fixed: braces at guardrail height on every working platform, both sides.
- Check each claw's catch has closed; a claw resting on a rung without latching is a brace that leaves during use.
